This Strathisla was from the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, a 26 year old release from 1997, drawn from cask 47799 and bottled at 51.9%. Just 187 bottles were filled. Strathisla was established in 1786 as the Milltown distillery by the Isla in Keith, Banffshire; it is the home of Chivas Regal. Its twin pagodas and water wheel make it one of the prettiest distilleries in Scotland.

Distilled on soft Isla valley water in traditional pot stills, building the classic Strathisla style. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the fruity character to the fore. At this age it is rich and rounded, the fruit folded into a honeyed, waxy body. Sherry wood suits the rich make, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. Dunnage warehouses on site give a slow, humid maturation by the river. The make leans rich and fruity, fuller than the lighter Speyside style.

At its natural 51.9% it is rich and fruity. Ripe orchard fruit and a gentle ginger sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is rounded and full, the fruity spirit shining through. Ripe pear and honey draw out the close. This is the malt of Scotland's oldest working Highland distillery.
