Description
This Strathisla was from the independent bottler High Spirits' Collection matured to 17 year old from 1989, drawn from cask 5249 and bottled at 46%. Only 235 bottles were released. Strathisla, opened in 1786 by the Isla in Keith, Banffshire, is the home of Chivas Regal. Its twin pagodas and water wheel make it one of the prettiest distilleries in Scotland.
Distilled on soft Isla valley water in traditional pot stills, building the classic Strathisla style. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the fruit. Mid age brings a deeper honey and a riper orchard fruit. Sherry wood suits the rich make, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. The distillery stands among gardens by the rushing River Isla. The malt is the fruity heart of the Chivas Regal blend, owned by Chivas Brothers since 1950. Water comes from the Broomhill Spring, the distillery set on the River Isla at Keith.
At 46% it is soft, fruity and creamy. Ripe orchard fruit and a gentle ginger sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is rounded and full, the fruity spirit shining through. A fruity, gently spiced finish lingers long. This is the malt of Scotland's oldest working Highland distillery.
