Description
The Caskhound bottled this Strathclyde single grain, a 29 year old from 1994, drawn from cask 4565941 and bottled at 42.1%. 188 bottles in all. Strathclyde was first built in 1927 on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow, and it remains Glasgow's last working distillery. Its grain whisky goes into blends such as Long John, Ballantine's and Chivas Regal.
Distilled continuously in twin Coffey stills from wheat, giving a clean, high strength grain whisky. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, American oak giving coconut and toffee. Past twenty five years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. Light grain spirit takes oak readily, the ex-Bourbon lending coconut and vanilla. It is now part of the Chivas Brothers stable, working quietly in the city. Glasgow once held distilleries across the city; today only Strathclyde remains. Aged single grain has become prized for its soft, oily, dessert sweet character.
At cask strength 42.1% it is full bodied. The ex-Bourbon gives crème brûlée, coconut and vanilla. A crème brûlée and a polished oak give it depth. A long, oily finish carries a coconut lift. This is Strathclyde's sweet, oily single grain.
