Description
Single grain Strathclyde, an independent The Single Cask Ltd bottling, a 26 year old from 1993, drawn from cask 243368 and bottled at 55.3%. 191 bottles in all. Strathclyde was built in 1927 in the Gorbals, Glasgow, and it is one of Scotland's largest grain distilleries. Strathclyde stands on the site of an old cotton mill in the Gorbals.
It was worked through continuous column stills from wheat, for the light, sweet grain spirit the distillery is known for. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending coconut and vanilla. Long ageing brings a deep coconut, toffee and a mellow, polished oak. The high strength spirit mellows slowly into a soft, sweet old grain. Glasgow once held distilleries across the city; today only Strathclyde remains. Aged single grain has become prized for its soft, oily, dessert sweet character. The continuous still gives a clean, high strength spirit that mellows with years. Strathclyde takes its name from the old region around Glasgow.
At a hearty 55.3% it carries real weight. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. It closes long, sweet and oily. This is an old Glasgow single grain whisky.
