Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank matured to 14 year old from 1979 and bottled at 46%. Springbank, run by J and A Mitchell since 1828 in Campbeltown, is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Each bottling is filled and labelled in Campbeltown rather than shipped away.
This was run through the distillery's part triple distillation, the malt floor malted and gently peated, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the distillery character to the fore. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. The oily, robust make carries cask flavour while holding its own character. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation.
Bottled at 46%, it is rounded. Creamy vanilla and oak sweetness meets a salty, waxy depth with a whisper of peat. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
