Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank, a 40 year old Campbeltown malt and bottled at 40.1%. The Springbank distillery, established in 1828, is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Little has changed in the way the spirit is made for the best part of a century.
The make was run two and a half times through the stills from lightly peated malt, and worm tub cooled in the old way. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the spirit. Very old Campbeltown make turns profound, oily and tropical with a coastal salt. The oily, robust make carries cask flavour while holding its own character. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
Bottled at 40.1%, it is rounded. Vanilla, cream and light coconut meets a salty, waxy depth with a whisper of peat. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a salty body. A long finish smoulders on salt and oil. This is the most traditional malt in Scotch.
