Description
This Springbank was from the independent bottler Acorn, a 39 year old release from 1968, drawn from cask 617 and bottled at 47.6%. A release of 256 bottles. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery distilling since 1828, one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Concerto barley is malted on the floors and kilned in the distillery's own kiln.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. At this great age the malt is full and waxy, the fruit deep and the salt mellow. The oily, robust make carries cask flavour while holding its own character. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak.
At cask strength 47.6% it is muscular. Creamy vanilla and oak sweetness meets a salty, waxy depth with a whisper of peat. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
