Description
A Springbank single malt, selected and bottled by Hunter Laing, a 30 year old Campbeltown malt from 1993 and bottled at 50.8%. A release of 139 bottles. The Springbank distillery, in Mitchell family hands since 1828, is prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. The distillery champions the old, slow, labour intensive way of making whisky.
The make was drawn off after two and a half distillations of gently peated malt, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. Decades leave it waxy and oxidative, candied fruit and brine with great depth. Refill oak lets the distillery character lead, all oily weight and coastal salt. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
At a full 50.8% it is bold and oily. A salty, waxy depth with a whisper of peat meet a vanilla and toffee sweetness from the cask. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. The finish runs deep, briny and warm. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
