Description
This is a Springbank single malt, chosen and bottled by Glenscoma, a 30 year old from 1991, drawn from cask 222 and bottled at 47.2%. 226 bottles in all. Established in 1828, Springbank is famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
The spirit was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, and slowly worm tub cooled. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. Decades leave it waxy and oxidative, candied fruit and brine with great depth. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
At a full 47.2% it is bold and oily. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat sit over a sherried dried fruit and nuts. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. Salt and oily fruit see out a long finish. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
