Description
Hunter Laing bottled this Springbank, a 30 year old from 1990 and bottled at 44.1%. The outturn was 103 bottles. Established in 1828, Springbank is one of the last working distilleries of old Campbeltown. The cult around Springbank has made it one of the most collected of all malts.
The spirit was made by Springbank's singular two and a half times distillation, then condensed through worm tubs. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla under the oily fruit. At this great age the malt is full and waxy, the fruit deep and the salt mellow. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the oily, complex core over time. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart.
Undiluted at 44.1%, it is intense. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with vanilla, honey and coconut. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
