Description
Single malt Springbank, an independent Decadent Drinks bottling, a 26 year old Campbeltown malt from 1995 and bottled at 51.1%. A release of 249 bottles. The Springbank distillery, in Mitchell family hands since 1828, is a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. The family owner also holds Cadenhead's, the oldest independent bottler in Scotland.
The make was given Springbank's unusual two and a half times distillation, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. Years in oak deepen the fruit and the maritime character together. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation.
At 51.1%, undiluted, it is deep and powerful. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on vanilla, honey and coconut. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. The close is rich, fruit over a saline depth. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
