Description
A Springbank single malt, selected and bottled by Glenscoma, aged 24 year old from 1993, drawn from cask 11 and bottled at 49%. Just 260 bottles were filled. Springbank, run by J and A Mitchell since 1828 in Campbeltown, is the most traditional distillery in Scotch, malting all its own barley. The distillery champions the old, slow, labour intensive way of making whisky.
This was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At this age it is rich and complex, the fruit folded into a waxy, briny body. Worm tub condensing and an oil fired wash still build the rich, oily texture the distillery is known for. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart.
At a natural 49% it is full and oily. Dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask underpins brine, wax and a light peat note. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. The close is rich, fruit over a saline depth. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
