Description
This Springbank was from the independent bottler Glenscoma, a 23 year old Campbeltown malt from 1993, drawn from cask 335 and bottled at 54.2%. The outturn was 194 bottles. The Springbank distillery, in Mitchell family hands since 1828, is a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Each bottling is filled and labelled in Campbeltown rather than shipped away.
The make was given Springbank's unusual two and a half times distillation, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the maritime malt. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Quality and tradition, not volume, have always been the watchwords here. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof.
Bottled at a cask strength 54.2%, it is rich. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on dried fruit and a walnut richness. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A long finish smoulders on salt and oil. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
