Description
Bottled by Hart Brothers, this Springbank, a 22 year old release from 1993 and bottled at 50.7%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Little has changed in the way the spirit is made for the best part of a century.
It was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and worm tub cooled in the old way. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery.
At a hearty 50.7% it carries real weight. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on creamy vanilla and oak sweetness. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a salty body. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
