Description
This official Springbank single malt, aged 21 year old and bottled at 48%. The outturn was 342 bottles. Springbank, distilling since 1828 in Campbeltown, is prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. Small output and a cult following keep its bottles allocated and keenly sought.
This was distilled the Springbank way, two and a half times from floor malted barley, the vapour cooled in worm tubs. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At this age it is rich and complex, the fruit folded into a waxy, briny body. Long maturation suits the heavy, characterful make, the cask knitting slowly with the spirit. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
Undiluted at 48%, it is intense. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Soft fruit and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. The close is rich, fruit over a saline depth. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
