Description
Bottled by Copper Monument, this Springbank, aged 21 year old from 1995, drawn from cask 470 and bottled at 45.8%. Only 240 bottles were released. Springbank, distilling since 1828 in Campbeltown, is a cult Campbeltown distillery with a devoted following. Little has changed in the way the spirit is made for the best part of a century.
This was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and worm tub cooled in the old way. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this age it is rich and complex, the fruit folded into a waxy, briny body. Worm tub condensing and an oil fired wash still build the rich, oily texture the distillery is known for. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt.
At cask strength 45.8% it is muscular. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on a sherried dried fruit and nuts. Soft fruit and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. Sea salt and fruit draw out the close. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
