Description
A Springbank single malt, selected and bottled by casQueteers, aged 20 year old from 1996, drawn from cask 107 and bottled at 53.6%. 160 bottles in all. Springbank, founded in 1828 in Campbeltown, is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
This was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this age it is rich and complex, the fruit folded into a waxy, briny body. Years in oak deepen the fruit and the maritime character together. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased.
At 53.6%, undiluted, it is deep and powerful. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with dried fruit and a walnut richness. A coastal salt and an orchard fruit lift it. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
