Description
This is a Springbank single malt, chosen and bottled by Archives matured to 17 year old from 1999, drawn from cask 269 and bottled at 50.3%. Just 287 bottles were filled. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. The whole process, malting included, is carried out by hand on the one site.
It was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and slowly worm tub cooled. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. By this age the maritime weight rounds into a richer, fuller malt. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
At a natural 50.3% it is full and oily. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat sit over dried fruit, fig and walnut. A coastal salt and an orchard fruit lift it. It closes long, oily and salty. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
