Description
Single malt Springbank, an independent Douglas Laing bottling, a 15 year old from 1993, drawn from cask DL 4704 and bottled at 50%. Just 365 bottles were filled. In Mitchell family hands since 1828, Springbank is a family distillery that malts and bottles every drop on site. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, near the head of its sea loch.
The spirit was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. Sea air works into the warehouses, lending a saline thread as the whisky breathes. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt.
At a natural 50% it is full and oily. A vanilla and toffee sweetness meets an oily, maritime character with light peat. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
