Description
This is a Springbank single malt, chosen and bottled by Blackadder, aged 14 year old from 2001, drawn from cask 130 and bottled at 57.1%. A release of 132 bottles. Springbank, distilling since 1828 in Campbeltown, is a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
This was given Springbank's unusual two and a half times distillation, and slowly worm tub cooled. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the maritime malt. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. Years in oak deepen the fruit and the maritime character together. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation.
At cask strength 57.1% it is muscular. Oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat ride on dried fruit, fig and walnut. A coastal salt and an orchard fruit lift it. Sea salt and fruit draw out the close. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
