Description
Bottled by Cadenhead's, this Springbank, a 14 year old from 1991 and bottled at 53.9%. The outturn was 654 bottles. In Mitchell family hands since 1828, Springbank is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Little has changed in the way the spirit is made for the best part of a century.
The spirit was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, and worm tub cooled in the old way. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. The hands on, small scale working shapes a spirit of real individuality. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town.
At a natural 53.9% it is full and oily. A sherried dried fruit and nuts meets an oily, maritime character with light peat. A waxy weight and a saline tang give it real body. The finish runs deep, briny and warm. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
