Description
This official Springbank single malt, aged 10 year old from 2015 and bottled at 55%. A release of 11400 bottles. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, run much as it was a century ago. It makes three malts: Springbank, the peated Longrow and the unpeated Hazelburn.
It was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, then condensed through worm tubs. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the maritime malt. Younger here, it keeps a vigorous, briny freshness over the oily body. Years in oak deepen the fruit and the maritime character together. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt.
At a full 55% it is bold and oily. A dry, nutty, almond edge from the cask underpins oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat. A coastal salt and an orchard fruit lift it. It finishes deep, complex and maritime. This is an oily, salty Campbeltown classic.
