Description
A Springbank single malt, selected and bottled by Duncan Taylor, a 10 year old from 1996 and bottled at 46%. Established in 1828, Springbank is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. The distillery champions the old, slow, labour intensive way of making whisky.
The spirit was made by Springbank's singular two and a half times distillation, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A wine cask held it, layering berry fruit over the coastal malt. Younger here, it keeps a vigorous, briny freshness over the oily body. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch.
At 46% it is clean and characterful. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with plum, cherry and red fruit. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. Sea salt and fruit draw out the close. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
