Description
Caroni is the mythologised closed distillery of Trinidad, shut in 2003 and famous for the heavy, industrial rum collectors prize. This single cask from the 1997 vintage was bottled by Spirits Shop Selection as part of its Legend Collection, a heavy Trinidad rum aged 21 years and presented at a serious 63.8% cask strength.
Distilled from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it sits firmly in the dirty Caroni camp, with rubber, tar and barrel notes over roasted chocolate, vanilla, black pepper and baking spice. A faintly sweet undertone runs beneath the heavy tar, a trait this vintage is loved for. The strength asks for patience, and a generous stretch of airtime draws out extra roasted depth. This is a bottle for seasoned drinkers already at home with oily, full-proof Caroni, intensely characterful and built for slow, focused sessions.
