Description
This Speyside Distillery malt was from the independent bottler Brave New Spirits matured to 21 year old from 2000, drawn from cask 2786 and bottled at 54.2%. A release of 258 bottles. The Speyside Distillery, hand built near Kingussie and first run in 1990 near Kingussie in the upper Spey valley, is the source of the SPEY malts. The first single malt, Drumguish, appeared in 1993, three years after the first spirit ran.
It was worked slowly through short stills to keep the spirit light, for the light, fruity Speyside make the distillery is known for. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the fruit lead. Long ageing brings a deeper dried fruit character and a mellow oak spice. Refill oak lets the delicate distillery character lead, fruit over malt. A long fermentation builds the fruity esters that mark the house style. Set in the Cairngorm foothills, it counts among Scotland's prettiest distilleries.
At a full 54.2% it is intense yet fruity. Green apple and a gentle spice sit alongside honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is fresh and clean, the fruity spirit shining through. A fruity, gently spiced finish lingers. This is the SPEY single malt from near Kingussie.
