Description
Living Souls selected this Speyburn, aged 18 year old and bottled at 46.5%. Speyburn, first built in 1897 in the heart of Speyside at Rothes, was designed by the pagoda architect Charles Doig. It was the first Scottish distillery fitted with drum maltings, which still stand on site.
The spirit was made in copper onion stills, the spirit cooled in worm tubs, for a fruity, honeyed make of real charm. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. At this age it is rounded and full, the fruit folded into a honeyed, waxy body. Long, gentle ageing turns the orchard fruit towards honey and soft spice. The name joins the Spey with the Scots word burn, for a Speyside stream. A long fermentation builds the fruity esters that mark the house style. One of the best selling malts abroad, it stays quietly under appreciated at home. The classic onion stills and worm tubs give a fresh yet rounded Speyside spirit.
At 46.5% it is clean and fruity. Vanilla and a creamy note from the barrel, with pear, honey and a fragrant lift. A dried fruit and a gentle oak spice give it depth. A warming, fruity finish lingers. This is the fresh Speyside malt of the Glen of Rothes.
