Description
Single malt Speyburn, an independent Langside Distillers bottling, a 10 year old from 2007 and bottled at 46%. A release of 795 bottles. Opened in 1897 by John Hopkin and Company in a sheltered Speyside glen by the Granty Burn, Speyburn is a classic Speyside single malt. Charles Doig, inventor of the distillery pagoda, designed it, and his ventilator still tops the stillhouse.
Distilled on Granty Burn water through onion stills with worm tubs, building the classic Speyside style it is loved for. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. At this age the spirit is fresh and fruity, the apple and pear bright. The worm tub weight carries cask flavour while keeping the Speyside finesse. The first spirit ran in a December snowstorm in 1897, to date the fillings to the Diamond Jubilee. Water is drawn from the Granty Burn, a clear tributary of the Spey. Inver House runs Speyburn alongside Old Pulteney, Balblair and anCnoc.
At an easy 46% it is gentle. A fresh, fruity sweetness meet honeyed oak sweetness underneath. It is fresh and clean, the fruity spirit shining through. Apple, honey and oak draw out the close. This is a classic, fruity Speyside single malt.
