Nanclares makes this barrel-aged Albariño from 35-year-old vines on sandy loam and granite in the Salnés valley of Rías Baixas. Eleven months on lees in wood give a textured, mineral white with citrus, ripe apple, stone fruit and a saline finish.
Description
Bodegas Nanclares works just two hectares in Salnés, the coolest and most maritime subzone of Rías Baixas, with a minimum intervention approach aimed at individual site expression. Soverribas comes from a single vineyard of 35-year-old Albariño vines planted on sandy loam over granite bedrock, close to the Atlantic. The cool, damp climate and granite soils give Albariño its bright acidity and saline drive, while the old vines yield concentrated, low-cropped fruit. Unusually for the region, the wine is fermented and aged eleven months on its lees in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange and the breakdown of yeast cells build texture, weight and a savoury complexity without overt oak flavour. It shows pale gold, with a nose of lemon, ripe apple, white peach and a smoky mineral note. The palate is dry and layered, with citrus, orchard fruit and a firm saline mineral spine running to a long finish. Time in wood makes this a fuller, gastronomic Albariño rather than a simple aperitif style. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass. Excellent with grilled fish, scallops and shellfish.
