Jimenez-Landi makes Sotorrondero in Mentrida from old-vine Garnacha and Syrah grown on granite at altitude. Eleven months in French oak under sustainable farming give ripe red berry, plum, pepper and a wild, herbal lift.
Description
Sotorrondero is a red from Jimenez-Landi in D.O. Mentrida, in the Toledo hills northwest of Castilla La Mancha. It blends 60 percent Garnacha with 40 percent Syrah, the Garnacha from old vines around 45 years of age planted at 750 to 850 metres near San Vicente, the Syrah from younger vineyards at 630 metres in Mentrida itself. The vines grow on granite and sandy soils that drain freely and keep yields low, while the altitude brings cold nights that hold acidity and freshness in a hot, dry climate. Farming is sustainable, with respect for the surrounding landscape. The wine is aged 11 months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and frames the fruit with measured spice rather than heavy wood. It is deep ruby, with ripe red berries and plum over black pepper, liquorice, wild thyme and a faint smoky edge. The palate is full and warming, with supple tannins, juicy acidity and a long savoury finish that keeps the Garnacha fruit and the granite freshness in balance. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted, with roast lamb, grilled beef or duck.
