Soto y Manrique makes this organic Garnacha in D.O. Cebreros, from old bush vines on granite in the Sierra de Gredos at 700 to 1,100 metres. Fourteen months in barrel give an elegant, light red of raspberry, wild strawberry and herbs.
Description
Bodega Soto y Manrique was founded by Jesús María Soto after years in the Duero Valley, drawn to the Sierra de Gredos and its old Garnacha. La Mira comes from D.O. Cebreros in Castilla y León, where bush trained old vines grow on granite soils at altitudes between 700 and 1,100 metres. The granite is poor and quick to drain, holding back yields and pushing the vines to concentrate aroma, while the high altitude and the wide swing between warm days and cold nights lock in acidity and floral, herbal detail. Farming is organic and the approach is gentle, with 14 months in barrel that round the tannin through slow oxygen exchange while leaving the fruit and the site's freshness intact. The wine is light in colour and weight. The nose leads with fresh raspberry and wild strawberry over a subtle herbal note, with rose and a touch of pepper. The palate is elegant and fine boned, the tannin silky, the granite giving a mineral, savoury length. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you wish. It pairs with duck, game birds and roast poultry.
