Description
Son Prim is a small family estate in Sencelles, in the centre of Mallorca, where Jaume Llabres tends close to six hectares of vineyard. The island's warm Mediterranean climate and stony, calcareous soils suit Syrah well, ripening the fruit to full concentration while the maritime influence and cooler nights hold enough acidity to keep the wine balanced. This single-variety Syrah is aged in oak barrels, where the slow exchange of oxygen softens the tannin and adds spice, smoke and a layer of structure to the dense fruit. The wine is deep violet-red, with powerful aromas of fresh blackberry, plum and date, intertwined with black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. The palate is full bodied and warm, reflecting the 14.5 percent alcohol, with ripe fruit, firm but rounded tannins and a long, smoky, savoury finish. This is a generous, intense red made for hearty food. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, in a large bowled glass. It stands up to grilled and roasted red meats and rich braises.
