Anima Negra makes Son Negre on Mallorca from Callet, an indigenous island grape made in only eight vintages. Aged 15 months in French oak under respectful farming, it shows red berry, cherry and a savoury, herbal, earthy depth.
Description
Son Negre is a rare red from Anima Negra in VT Mallorca, made only in the strongest years and limited to a handful of vintages. It is a single-varietal wine from Callet, an indigenous Balearic grape being revived by a younger generation of growers and known as a difficult, high-yielding variety that needs careful work in the vineyard to give concentration. The vines grow on the island's poor, free-draining soils under a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes, which together keep the naturally moderate alcohol and savoury character in balance. Yields are reduced and the farming is respectful of the land. The wine is aged 15 months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a light frame of spice without covering the fruit. It is deep cherry-red, with red berries, cherry and plum over dried herbs, black pepper and an earthy, mineral depth. The palate is medium to full, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects both the grape and the island. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted, with roast lamb or grilled red meat.
