Bodega Sommos make this Somontano red from Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot grown on sandy loam soils in Barbastro. Eight months in French oak frame a ripe, intense wine of dark cherry and berry fruit with spice and a warm, modern body.
Description
Bodega Sommos sits in the heart of the D.O. Somontano in Barbastro, Aragón, an architecturally striking modern winery that pursues an avant garde style while keeping its roots in the region. Varietales Tinto blends Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot from a vineyard planted on sandy loam soils that are low in organic matter, conditions that limit vigour and give well defined fruit. Somontano lies at the foot of the Pyrenees, where altitude and cool mountain nights extend the growing season and preserve freshness in grapes that ripen fully in the warm days, giving the wine both ripeness and balance. The three varieties contribute in turn, Tempranillo its red fruit and structure, Syrah its dark fruit and pepper, Merlot its roundness and soft tannin. Eight months in French oak adds a frame of spice and vanilla and softens the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange while the ripe fruit stays in front. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry, blackberry and a touch of pepper and oak spice. The palate is full bodied and warm, with ripe, supple tannins, fresh acidity and a generous, fruit driven finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits grilled and roasted meats.
