Description
Sommos Varietales Blanco is an aromatic white from D.O. Somontano, made by Bodega Sommos at their striking winery in Barbastro, in the Aragonese foothills of the Pyrenees. The blend brings together Chardonnay for body, Gewurztraminer for perfume and Riesling for acidity and lift. Somontano sits where the plain meets the mountains, so vineyards benefit from a wide swing between warm days and cool nights, which slows ripening and locks in aromatics and freshness. The grapes are picked separately and fermented, then the wine spends four months in French oak, a short elevage that adds a light creamy texture and a touch of spice without covering the fruit. The aromatic varieties drive the character, giving a nose of white peach, rose and honeysuckle with a floral top note. The palate is dry to off dry in feel, medium bodied and rounded, with stone fruit, a gentle ginger spice and a fresh, slightly perfumed finish held by Riesling acidity. Expect a pale gold colour. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
