Sommos Reserva is a Syrah-led blend with Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from Bodega Sommos in D.O. Somontano. Grown on the winery’s own vineyards in the Pyrenean foothills, it shows ripe plum and blackberry with a smoky edge, aged 12 months in French oak.
Description
Sommos Reserva comes from Bodega Sommos in D.O. Somontano, an Aragón appellation in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The estate works 355 hectares of its own vineyards around a glass and steel winery built into the slope, reaching 27 metres below ground so that gravity and cool, stable temperatures can be used through the production process. The blend leads with Syrah, filled out by Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, each grape adding a layer: Syrah the pepper and dark fruit, Merlot the flesh, Tempranillo the savoury core and Cabernet the structure. Somontano's continental climate and the altitude of the foothills give warm days and cool nights, which ripen the grapes fully while holding acidity. The wine ages 12 months in French oak barrels, which rounds the tannins and adds vanilla and spice through slow oxygen exchange. It pours a deep, dense red. The nose is ripe plum and blackberry with a smoky nuance, black pepper and vanilla. The palate is full and intense, with firm but ripe tannin and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant ahead. It suits grilled and roasted meats.
