Bodega Sommos makes this Somontano red from Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah grown in the Aragonese foothills of the Pyrenees. Fourteen months in French oak give it ripe plum and red berry fruit, peppery spice and a firm, polished structure.
Description
Sommos Premium is a red wine from Bodega Sommos, whose striking glass and steel winery sits in Barbastro at the heart of the D.O. Somontano, in Aragón. It blends Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah grown on the alluvial and limestone soils of the Pyrenean foothills, where altitude and a wide diurnal range between warm days and cool nights slow ripening and preserve acidity and aromatic definition. The grapes ferment before the wine spends fourteen months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins, fixes colour and adds spice and vanilla without masking the fruit. Malolactic fermentation rounds out the sharper malic acidity and lends a fuller, savoury texture. The wine is deep ruby in the glass. The nose carries ripe plum and red berry fruit, black pepper and liquorice over cedar and tobacco from the barrel. The palate is full and structured, with firm but polished tannins and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted an hour ahead, alongside roast lamb, grilled beef or aged hard cheeses.
