Description
Sommos Crianza is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend from Bodega Sommos in the D.O. Somontano, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in Aragón. The estate farms 355 hectares around a striking steel and glass winery, and the Somontano name, meaning under the mountain, points to the cooler, continental conditions that suit these two later ripening varieties. The altitude and the swing between warm days and cool nights extend the growing season, helping the Cabernet build firm tannin and cassis while the Syrah brings pepper and dark fruit. The blend is aged for six months in French oak, a short, controlled élevage that softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds vanilla and sweet spice without masking the fruit. Expect a deep ruby colour, a nose of ripe plum and black cherry lifted by clove and black pepper, and a medium to full palate with ripe tannins and a fresh, spicy finish. This is an approachable, modern style built for the table rather than the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted briefly, with grilled meats or a hearty stew.
