Description
Sommerbauer is an Austrian producer, and this bottling is a sparkling apple wine made from fermented apples rather than grapes, which places it among the lighter fruit fizzes at eight percent alcohol. The apples are pressed and fermented much like a still cider, then given their sparkle in tank, a method that keeps the fresh, pressed fruit character clean and to the front. Stainless steel and early bottling hold the wine's crisp, youthful profile.
The colour is pale straw with a light, lively bead. The nose is clearly apple led, with pressed orchard fruit, pear and a cut quince edge over a soft floral note. On the palate it is fresh and gently dry, light in body, with the apple fruit carried by a fine spritz to a clean, tart finish. Serve well chilled at 6 to 8 degrees in a white wine glass or a flute. It makes a refreshing low alcohol aperitif and suits green salads, roast pork and lighter fruit desserts.
