Solanera is a Monastrell led blend from Bodega Castaño in D.O. Yecla, Murcia, grown at 750 metres on chalky, pebbly soil. Old vine fruit and ten months in oak give ripe plum, pepper and a warm, full bodied palate.
Description
Solanera is a red from Bodega Castaño in D.O. Yecla, Murcia, blending Monastrell at 70 per cent with Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tintorera. The Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera come from 44 year old vines and the Cabernet from 19 year old vines, planted at 750 metres on chalky soil rich in pebbles with sandy and clay patches. Yecla is a warm, dry inland region in the south east of Spain, where Monastrell ripens fully to give ripe, dark fruit and a higher alcohol of 14.5 per cent, while the altitude and cool nights keep enough acidity for balance. The pebbly soils drain well and add a savoury edge. Fermentation runs in stainless steel at a controlled 26 to 28 degrees, after which the wine ages ten months in French and American oak. The barrel time softens the tannins and adds spice and a light toast. The colour is deep, dark ruby. The nose shows ripe plum and cherry with black pepper, liquorice, dark chocolate and dried herbs over toasted oak. The palate is full and warm, the tannins ripe and rounded, the finish long. Serve at 17 degrees and decant. This wine is vegan. It suits grilled lamb, beef and roasted vegetables.
