Bodegas Masroig makes this young single varietal red from Samsó, the local name for Carignan, grown across the schist and clay slopes of D.O. Montsant. Fresh and unoaked, it shows wild red berries, cherry and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
Solà Fred Negre is a young red from Bodegas Masroig in D.O. Montsant, the Catalan appellation that rings the more famous Priorat. It is made entirely from Samsó, the regional name for Carignan, a variety long established on Montsant's poor schist and clay soils. These low-fertility slopes restrict vine vigour and keep yields naturally modest, which concentrates flavour in the fruit. The continental climate with Mediterranean influence brings warm days and cooler nights, and that diurnal swing preserves the acidity that gives the wine its freshness. Vinification follows the traditional route for an early-drinking style: fermentation in tank with no oak ageing, so the focus stays on primary fruit and the variety's natural structure. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose is full of fresh red berries, ripe cherry and plum, with a savoury lift of dried herbs and cracked black pepper. The palate is juicy and direct, with moderate tannin and a clean, earthy finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, no decanting needed. It works well with grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato-based dishes.
