An unaged Cape Verde grogue from Sodade, fresh cane juice off a pot still, bright with lime, sugarcane and citrus over a soft milky note, flavourful and easy-drinking despite its youth at 43.1%.
Description
Sodade Cana Rocca Ouro Blanco is a white grogue from Cape Verde, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice in the agricole tradition that the islands call grogue. Bottled by Sodade, it is a young, unaged cane rum, the kind of bright, snappy white spirit that Santo Antao's cane fields are known for.
Unusually for a pot still grogue, it comes off as remarkably flavourful for something so young, with lime, sugarcane and a spread of citrus on the nose, a soft milky or lactic edge, and chamomile-like floral hints. The palate stays fresh and clean, citrus and cane sap leading to a dry, distinctly agricole finish. Well made and lively, it drinks easily neat and makes a fragrant, characterful base for a Ti Punch or a long citrus-forward cooler at 43.1%.
