Soca-rel Escursac is a Mallorcan red from Pep Rodriguez, made from the rare local Escursac grape under organic and natural winemaking. Light and fresh, it shows red berry, floral and herbal character with a savoury island edge.
Description
Soca-rel Escursac is made by Pep Rodriguez on Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, from Escursac, a rare local variety he champions as part of a winery built entirely on the island's native grapes. The vineyards sit in a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes, which keep the nights cool and help the thin-skinned Escursac hold freshness and aromatic detail. Farming is organic and the wine is made naturally, with minimal intervention in the cellar and no oak, so the result is a transparent expression of the grape and place. Without barrel ageing the wine keeps its bright primary fruit and a light, fresh structure. The colour is a light to medium red. The nose shows red berries and cherry lifted by floral and dried-herb notes over a savoury, earthy base. The palate is light bodied, with fresh acidity, fine soft tannins, a gentle peppery edge and a clean finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits lighter meats, poultry, vegetable dishes and salads, and rewards drinking young.
