Quinta de Soalheiro makes Allo in Vinho Verde from Albariño and Loureiro on granite soils in the Minho valley. Hand picked and fermented cool after a two-day settling, it is fresh and floral, with lemon, lime, white peach and a light, saline freshness.
Description
Soalheiro Allo comes from Quinta de Soalheiro in the DOC Vinho Verde in Minho, northern Portugal, a pioneering estate for Albariño in the region. It is a blend of Albariño and Loureiro from plots on granite soils in the valleys of the Minho and Lima rivers, close to the Atlantic and to the Spanish border. The granite subsoil and the cool, wet, maritime climate give these grapes their high natural acidity and a light, mineral character. The fruit is hand harvested into small boxes, then pressed, and the must is left to settle for 48 hours before fermentation at controlled temperatures, a step that produces a cleaner, more precise wine. Albariño brings stone fruit and citrus with body, while Loureiro adds a distinctive floral, herbal character recalling laurel. The colour is pale straw with green reflections. The nose is fresh and floral, with lemon, lime and white peach over white flowers. The palate is light bodied, dry and crisp, with vivid acidity, a faint saline note and a clean, refreshing finish. At 11 percent alcohol it is a bright, easy drinking Atlantic white. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white glass. It is ideal as an aperitif and with fish, seafood and salads.
