Description
Azienda Agricola Skerlj farms on the Carso, the limestone plateau of Friuli-Venezia Giulia near the Slovenian border, a windy, stony land tied to the old osmizza tradition of family farmhouses. This wine is made from Malvasia Istriana, the textured local Malvasia, in the macerated style native to the region. The grapes ferment with extended skin contact, which extracts colour, phenolics and tannin to give the amber hue and firm grip. The wine then spends twenty-four months in oak barrel, a long, slow ageing during which controlled oxygen passes through the wood and the lees soften and integrate the tannins, building a savoury, oxidative complexity rather than overt oak flavour. The thin limestone soils and breezy climate give concentrated, mineral fruit. Farming is natural and organic. The wine is deep amber. The nose is layered and savoury, with dried apricot, almond and beeswax over walnut and dried herbs. The palate is dry, broad and structured, the long ageing giving fine, resolved tannins and an earthy, saline finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees in a large glass.
