Skeldon SWR 1973 Full Proof 32 Year Old Demerara Rum

    Velier
    700ml / 60.5%
    Extra Añejo Rum

    $24450

Skeldon 1973 SWR is a legendary Demerara rum distilled in 1973 and aged for 32 years entirely in Guyana’s tropical climate before bottling by Velier in 2005 at full proof. Named after the closed Skeldon plantation, this rum was distilled at Uitvlugt, later transferred to Diamond distillery, and released in an outturn of just 544 bottles. Deep, dark and uncompromising, it stands as one of the most historically significant Demerara rums ever bottled.

Skeldon 1973 SWR is one of the most important historic Demerara rums ever released. While the name refers to the Skeldon plantation and distillery in Guyana, the original Skeldon distillery closed in 1960 and its stills were lost. What survives in this bottle is the continuation of a production style and marque that carried the Skeldon name forward.

The rum was distilled in 1973 at the Uitvlugt distillery, which at the time produced several Demerara marques using a Savalle multi column still. When Uitvlugt closed in 2000, remaining stocks and casks were transferred to the Diamond distillery. The casks containing the Skeldon 1973 SWR rum followed that same path, spending their entire maturation life in Guyana under tropical conditions.

The rum matured for 32 uninterrupted years in Guyana’s hot and humid climate. Tropical ageing dramatically accelerates interaction between spirit and oak, resulting in heavy evaporation and concentration. By the time the casks were identified and bottled by Velier in 2005, very little liquid remained. Only four barrels were recovered, yielding just 544 bottles.

The SWR marque is associated with a heavy Demerara style, and extended tropical ageing pushed this expression into extraordinary depth. On the nose, the rum is dense and dark, showing cocoa, coffee, leather, dried fruits and mature oak. The palate is powerful and structured, dominated by roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, dark caramel and firm tannins developed over decades in wood. The finish is extremely long, dry and authoritative.

Bottled at full proof at 60.5 percent ABV, with no dilution, additives or finishing, this release represents a convergence of lost distilleries, transferred stocks and extreme tropical ageing that cannot be replicated. Skeldon 1973 SWR stands not just as a rare rum, but as a liquid record of Guyana’s rum history.
