Description
Sindicat de la Figuera draws on old-vine Garnacha from La Figuera, a village in the D.O. Montsant that encircles Priorat in inland Catalonia. The project grew out of Rene Barbier's search for serious Grenache in these hills, and this rosat is made from those old vines. Montsant shares much of the rugged character of Priorat, with poor, stony soils of slate, granite and limestone that drain freely and force the vines deep, giving low yields of concentrated fruit. The climate is hot and dry but moderated by altitude and the cool air drawn down from the surrounding mountains, which holds acidity and freshness in the grapes. This rosat is made young, by gentle pressing of the Garnacha and a cool fermentation in stainless steel with no oak, to keep the fruit primary and the wine direct. Expect a bright pink and a nose of red berries, cherry and white peach with citrus peel, dried herbs and a peppery lift. The palate is dry and fruit-driven, with more body and warmth than a pale Provence style, and a clean saline finish from the stony site. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
