A 31-year Trinidad single cask at full 65.3%, bridging mature TDL and gentler Caroni with tropical fruit, mint, caramel and smoky wood lifted by a light tarry edge, big-flavoured and surprisingly integrated for its strength.
Description
Bottled by the collector-respected Italian house Silver Seal, this is a 31-year TDL from the 1991 vintage, drawn as a single cask and held to a full 65.3%. TDL is Trinidad Distillers, the living Angostura-group producer of mostly light, column-distilled rum, but at this age and strength the spirit takes on far more weight than the everyday style suggests.
The molasses spirit, aged in ex-bourbon oak, shows wood, varnish, mint and caramel on the nose, then caramel, wood, dried fruit and an oily texture on the palate, closing woody and minty with a light tarry note that nods toward Caroni. Ripe tropical fruit and toasted oak run through it, and despite the strength the alcohol stays well integrated. A serious, deep Trinidad rum that bridges mature TDL and the island's heavier tradition, worth the commitment for drinkers ready for it.
