A heavily sweetened Panamanian sipper built on vanilla, chocolate and caramel, soft and dessert leaning at 44%, closer to a vanilla forward liqueur than a dry aged ron despite the 15 year statement.
Description
Traspers is a Panamanian bottling from German outfit Sierra Madre GmbH, drawing on the soft, mellow molasses rum Panama is known for. On paper it carries a fifteen year age statement and ex-bourbon maturation, but the glass tells a sweeter, simpler story than the number suggests.
This is column still spirit turned firmly toward dessert. Vanilla dominates the nose, joined by chocolate and a sugary sweetness, while the palate piles on caramel, cocoa and more vanilla with a synthetic edge that gives away how much sweetening is at work. The finish is cocoa and citrus over a soft, sugary base. It is honest to call this a vanilla forward, heavily sweetened pour rather than a structured aged ron, best treated as an easy sipper for a sweet tooth or dropped into a cocktail where its richness has a job to do.
