Sicus makes this fresh orange wine from Macabeo grown in the Baix Penedes near the Catalan coast. Light skin contact and a low 11 percent give green apple, lemon and citrus peel over a saline, herbal grip.
Description
Sicus is the Penedes project of Eduard Pie Palomar, who returned to his family's land in Bonastre, in the coastal Baix Penedes, to make wines he describes as a liquid record of each year's weather. This orange wine comes from Macabeo, the workhorse white grape of Catalonia, here taken in a low-intervention, skin-contact direction. The vines grow on the calcareous soils close to the Mediterranean, where the sea breeze keeps acidity firm and lends a saline edge. The grapes macerate on their skins, which adds light tannin, texture and the wine's pale amber tint while keeping the fresh fruit intact. At 11 percent the wine stays light and energetic, a young, fruity style of orange wine rather than a heavy oxidative one. The colour is pale amber. The nose shows green apple, lemon and citrus peel over white flowers and a herbal note. The palate is dry, crisp and lightly textured, with a saline, gently grippy finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It works well with white fish, shellfish, fresh salads and goat cheese.
