Description
Shizuoka Pot Still W is a NAS cask strength single malt from Gaiaflow's Shizuoka distillery in Shizuoka prefecture. Still W is the distillery's wood-fired copper pot still, heated by local firewood rather than steam, and the W series showcases what that gentler, more variable heat source gives to the spirit. This 2022 domestic release was bottled for the Japanese market in the standard 700ml format.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 55.5%, the flavour profile shows fresh fruit at the fore with a supporting vanilla note from the wood, a new-make freshness and a light medicinal quality that hints at the still's character. A faint smokiness, perhaps from the wood-fired distillation itself or from the cedar washbacks, gives the palate an intriguing edge. The W bottlings typically reward time in the glass, opening up from their cask strength directness into a rounder, more layered expression.
